Two residents from Castlecliff are making a request to the Whanganui District Council for the installation of lighting at their local skatepark. Their primary aim is to enhance safety and attract more users to the facility.
Abraham Momoisea and Eden Waitai, both hailing from Castlecliff and regular visitors to the skatepark since its inception, took part in a council hearing via Zoom from the Castlecliff skatepark, even in the midst of rain.
Waitai highlighted the issue of limited skating time, especially for youngsters. He mentioned that his friend, Momoisea, often brings his nephew to the park, and they frequently encounter the question of why his nephew can’t skate for a bit longer. In the absence of proper lighting, some locals and community members have resorted to using their car lights and flashlights.
Waitai also suggested additional improvements for the skatepark, including more shelter, Wi-Fi availability, and the installation of CCTV cameras. Addressing the issue of graffiti, he proposed finding individuals with artistic skills to create proper artwork.
Momoisea’s submission to the council recommends the installation of four lights in and around Castlecliff Domain, where the skatepark is situated. He emphasised the importance of providing a well-lit environment, particularly during the early evenings, to encourage children and youth to utilise the park. Currently, some parents leave their kids at the park due to the lack of data on their phones, seeking Wi-Fi connectivity elsewhere.
Momoisea also pointed out that neighbouring areas, such as the skatepark on the east side near Kowhai Park, have Wi-Fi access, as do the surf club and Duncan Pavilion. He expressed his belief that extending this service to their park would not be an overly expensive endeavour.
Councillor Philippa Baker-Hogan praised the pair’s submission and inquired whether they would be interested in participating in the youth council. She also mentioned the potential for collaboration with a council sport and recreation working group, as well as with organisations like Sport Whanganui and Progress Castlecliff, to bring these proposed enhancements to fruition.
